Easter Sunday

“Did not our hearts burn within us?”
After Jesus rose from the grave the disciples were on the road to Emmaus. Jesus himself appears and draws near with them. However Luke says in His account that “their eyes were kept from recognizing him” in verse sixteen. The disciples began to talk about Jesus concerning His ministry and the events that recently happened prior and after His resurrection. Our precious Lord begs a dire question. “What is not necessary that Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” (Luke 24:26). Then from the Old testament beginning with Moses and all the prophets “He interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (27). Christ then continued with them till the evening and spent supper with them. After blessing and breaking the bread their eyes were opened and Jesus suddenly vanished.

The incarnate Christ was before their eyes and then they asked a question that brought my heart to tears. “Did not our heart burn with us while he talked to us on the road?” This Sunday we must ask ourselves the question: does my heart burn when I spend time in God's word? Or do we just read and go about our day unchanged? I’m afraid the answer to the question is we did not leave unchanged. Communion with God is delighting in His presence by abiding in His word daily. Our hearts must be filled with an utter joy when we delight in His word. I must confess many times in my Christian walk I find myself lacking in passion and devotion. However, we know our basis for acceptance is not our faithfulness but in the life, death and resurrection of Christ. Paul says concerning our hope in 1 Corinthians 15:17 , “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.” Our hope is sure and steady even in the midst of the storm. We know and can trust Jesus because He rose from the grave conquering death and sin. If you are dead in your sins come to Him! Oh dear believer if you are lacking faith and joy, come to Christ! Christ calls to those who are weary and heavy laden to come to Him. In coming to Christ may He cause your heart to burn with passion and delight in His glory!
